The Minnesota Frost were 7-3 through their first 10 games of the season. The were 3-7 through their next 10 games. It’s a tailspin putting the Frost’s playoff hopes at risk. Currently, the Frost sit in fourth place, the final PWHL playoff spot, only two points ahead of the Ottawa Charge.
Both teams have 10 games remaining, which includes key match ups against each other.
In particular, the teams play March 7 and again March 11 in what will likely decide the playoff race for the teams. If it’s not during those games and the race tightens further, the two teams face off a final time in the last week of the season on April 30.
Minnesota’s biggest issue to date is their inconsistent goaltending. Maddie Rooney has statistically been Minnesota’s better goaltender this season but her save percentage still sits seventh in the league, which means she’s behind a starter from each PWHL team. Nicole Hensley, who is signed through next season in Minnesota, sits last among all goaltenders with more than one game experience this season with a .866 save percentae. Only Boston’s Emma Soderberg has a worse goals against average sitting at 3.60, just below Hensley’s 3.56.
Up front Minnesota’s top line of Kendall Coyne Schofield, Taylor Heise, and Michela Cava picked up where they left off in the playoffs remaining one of the league’s top units. In fact, Minnesota is the only PWHL team with a full line of three forwards and two defenders in the top 20 in league scoring with blueliners Claire Thompson and Sophie Jaques among league leaders.
Minnesota returns to action Tuesday against first place Montreal.
