Maja Nylen Persson scored the overtime winner for the PWHL’s New York Sirens snapping a nine game losing skid. The 3-2 win came at home against the first place Montreal Victoire.
While New York hadn’t won a game in over a month, the team believes they’ve played better than their record suggests.
“I think we’ve deserved the last four games honestly, we have been out-shooting teams and playing the right way and we just haven’t got the bounces,” said Sirens forward Abby Roque. “I think we should’ve been the team that left that game with three points…That’s just how our season’s been going but I’m glad we pulled that one off and won.”
Roque scored for the Sirens in regulation, as did Sarah Fillier. Fillier echoed Roque’s belief that the team has deserved better. She said it was nice to finally see their hard work pay off.
“In past games, when we don’t get the outcome that we want, we just look at our game and see how we can learn from it,” said Fillier. “We’ve been building from it and I think you’re only really losing games when you don’t learn from your past – so we’ve just been taking it piece by piece and it’s nice to finally get rewarded.”
Corinne Schroeder made 28 saves for the Sirens in the win. Montreal got goals from Kati Tabin and Maureen Murphy in the loss.
Sirens Still Face Nearly Insurmountable Odds
A winning streak to close out the 2024-25 PWHL season won’t be enough on its own to get the New York Sirens into the playoffs. The team currently sits last, six points behind fifth place Ottawa, and 11 points behind fourth place Minnesota. They’ll need Minnesota, Boston, or Toronto to go on a monumental losing streak, couple with a Sirens winning streak to have a chance. New York also finished last overall in the PWHL’s inaugural season. They won the first overall pick and selected Sarah Fillier. Fillier, who is tied for the league lead in scoring, was not enough to turn the fate of the team around.
