Natalie Spooner has been back in the lineup for a while, but her impact returned Thursday night on home ice as the Toronto Sceptres beat the Montreal Victoire 4-1. Spooner scored her first two goals of the season in the victory.
She opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game batting the puck out of midair. She added the fourth goal of the game on a Toronto power play in the second.
“It felt good [to score],” said Spooner. “I’m just trying to do the right things out there, get to the net front. We thought of a play beforehand, and it ended up working out. It hit the post at first and I was thinking, ‘Oh man, just my luck!’ but then I was able to get the rebound, thankfully. It felt nice to get that one and felt like a good game overall.”
Maggie Connors and Allie Munroe had the other Toronto goals. Marie-Philip Poulin added to her league leading total scoring her 13th goal of the season for Montreal.
It was Toronto’s first win against Montreal in five meetings this season.
“I think we’ve had a lot of close games against them this year – a couple went to extra time,” said Toronto head coach Troy Ryan. “I thought it was a great response from our last game that we had in Laval, and I like the way we did it. Everybody contributed in some way, shape or form. A hard, playoff kind of atmosphere. I liked the physicality and obviously great to have a couple find the back of the net.”
