The bad news keeps coming for the New York Sirens as they lost defender Maja Nylen Persson for the foreseeable future. The Swedish defender was placed on long term injured by the Sirens after suffering an upper-body injury on March 16 against the Minnesota Frost.
Nylen Persson was the 10th overall selection in the 2024 PWHL Draft. This season she scored two goals and six points in 23 games before her injury. Nylen Persson will miss New York’s crucial upcoming games as they look to avoid elimination from the PWHL playoff race.
What the loss means to the New York Sirens
Every game is do or die right now for the PWHL’s New York Sirens. Nylen Persson is currently 17th among PWHL defenders in average time on ice averaging just over 19 minutes of ice per game. She’s a integral part of New York’s top four.
Defensively, she leads all New York Sirens defenders in goals against per 60 minutes at 1.37.
The loss could be even more devastating to Team Sweden at the rapidly approaching World Championships. Sweden’s blueline revolves around Nylen Persson. Sweden today named their roster for the 2025 World Championships, but the roster did not include Nylen Persson.
