As first reported by The Score’s Kyle Cushman, PWHL leading scorer Hannah Miller has applied to play for Team Canada internationally. Miller is Canadian born, hailing from North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Hannah Miller however, is currently ineligible to play for Canada. She previously represented China at the 2022 IIHF World Championships and 2022 Olympic Games. Cushman stated that Team Canada head coach Troy Ryan, who is also the coach of the PWHL’s Toronto Sceptres, confirmed Miller has applied to represent Canada.

Miller previously represented Canada at the 2013 and 2014 U-18 World Championships.

She joined China’s roster as one of several dual-passport players. China used those players as they attempted to bolster their roster for the Olympics in Beijing. It was a group that also included Canadian born players Leah Lum, Jessica Wong, Taylor Lum, Kimberly Newell, Camryn Wong, and Kasundra Betinol. China’s Olympic roster also included American born dual passport players such as Anna Segedi, Madison Woo, Rachel Llanes, Rebekah Kolstad, and Anna Fairman.

After the group helped China win promotion to Division 1A in 2022, and to the top division of the World Championships in 2023 however, China did not invite any of their dual passport players to participate in the 2024 World Championships in Utica, New York, leaving all of the Canadian and American born players off their roster.

For Miller, it means she’s currently without an international home to play hockey. If she were approved by the IIHF, Miller could potentially participate as a member of Team Canada at the upcoming World Championships in Czechia.

Miller currently has 10 goals and 23 points as a member of the PWHL’s Toronto Sceptres.
